Researchers from the Intel laboratory in Settle showed at a thematic conference their development that allows you to "extract" electricity from the surrounding space. More precisely, the circuit uses radio wave energy as a source. Located at a distance of 4.1 km from the television tower, the demonstrated prototype is capable of generating 60 μW of power, which is quite enough to power a thermometer or hygrometer equipped with an LCD display.
A device that draws electricity from radio waves is called Wireless Ambient Radio Power (WARP). It is assumed that it will expand the range of power sources that receive electricity from the environment, becoming on a par with generators that use vibration, solar energy and heat.
Receiving radio waves in the prototype was carried out on a conventional broadband TV antenna, and the circuit itself included a circuit for tuning to the selected channel and four stages that “collect” energy. With a load resistance of 8 kΩ, the voltage at the output of the unusual source was 0.7 V.
It is assumed that such power supplies will be able to provide the operation of autonomous sensors designed for contactless reading of readings. A huge advantage of this solution is a long period of continuous operation, not limited by the need to change batteries.
